Role: Giulio Cesare
Singer: Sarah Connolly
Opera: Giulio Cesare in Egitto (G. F. Händel)

From David McVicar’s Glyndebourne production in 2005.

Can we please just take a moment to appreciate what a stunningly handsome, utterly perfect Ceasar Sarah Connelly makes? I’m in love. See for yourselves!

Role: Cleopatra
Singer: Danielle de Niese
Opera: Giulio Cesare (G. F. Händel)

Staged at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2005, stage direction by David McVicar. de Niese is definitely not my favourite Cleopatra, and to be honest I feel that both her singing and her movements during “V’adoro, pupille” were far, far too exaggerated… but it’s a nice stage outfit.

Role: AlmirenaSinger: Deborah YorkOpera: Rinaldo (G. F. Händel)
A lovely, eccentric Almirena - blue-skinned and mermaid-haired. My favourite part of this costume is the black fingertips.

Role: Iris
Singer: Deborah York
Opera: Semele (G. F. Händel)

One of the most adorable things I have seen in a quite a while! Deborah York takes on the role as the goddess Iris in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden production of Semele - managing to look both elegant and quirky in Victorian granny boots, bloomers, and spectacles.

Role: Semele
Singer: Cecilia Bartoli
Opera: Semele (G. F. Händel)

Semele, lover of the god Jupiter, with the magic mirror given to her by the jealous Juno - making her fall in love with her own image.

“Myself I shall adore,
If I persist in gazing.
No object sure before
Was ever half so pleasing!”

I’m in love with the looks of this entire production (Wiener Staatsoper, 2010)… and I’m positively amazed by Alcina’s wig. Very suitable for the queen of an enchanted island!
